The race changes completely on stage 6. After five days of hilly preamble, Galician countryside and one flat sprint stage, the 2026 La Vuelta Femenina finally reveals its true character. The peloton arrives in Asturias, and the climbing begins in earnest.

Stage 6, which begins in Gijón/XiXón, covers 106.5km. It is the shortest day of racing, but also a route meant for the strongest climbers in the peloton, with a finish on the category 1 'wall' Les Praeres. The climb is nearly four kilometres with an average gradient of 13.5%, but it reaches sections as steep as 20%.

Those numbers demand respect. Les Praeres is not a long, grinding climb — it is short, savage and utterly unforgiving. There is nowhere to hide on a wall like this. Riders who have survived the first five stages on guile, positioning and strong team support will be completely exposed. The pure climbers will detach from the rest, and the gaps that open on this finish could be decisive for the overall classification.

It will be the first real test for those riders pursuing the overall title, but not the final one, because they will face the fearsome L'Angliru as the ultimate decider at this year's Vuelta. Whatever happens on Les Praeres, the race is not over. A rider who cracks today can still, theoretically, limit their losses and survive into Saturday. But a rider who goes deep here and wins could carry significant psychological momentum into the Angliru.

Marlen Reusser, eyeing the overall, will need to be at or near the front on this stage. The red jersey could change hands several times before the finish. Stage 6 is where the 2026 Vuelta Femenina truly begins.
