Course Preview
After four days of unrelenting Galician hills, stage 5 offers the peloton something entirely different: a genuine opportunity to breathe. The race crosses into Castile and León for the only flat stage of the week, and the sprinters — who have had almost nothing to work with until now — will be absolutely desperate to make it count.
The fifth day of racing is 119.6km beginning in León. There are two category 3 ascents on the menu: the Collada de Olleros de Alba at the 42.6km mark, followed by the Alto de La Garandilla at the 73.7km mark. The climbing is followed by a predominantly low-grade descent for the last 30km mainly downhill into the finish line at Astorga.
Those two climbs in the middle of the stage are unlikely to cause major GC disruption, but they could be enough to thin the bunch and prevent the pure sprinters from arriving together at Astorga. The long descent into the finish will help the bunch regroup, but a well-timed attack on one of those mid-race climbs from a punchy all-rounder could complicate the sprint entirely.
Stage 5 offers one obvious sprint day, but even the so-called hilly days have been full of leg-sapping roads. The sprint teams will have been conserving energy throughout the week precisely for a day like this, and they will ride aggressively to control the race and set up their leaders.
For the GC contenders, this is a day to recover. With Les Praeres arriving tomorrow, any sensible overall leader will sit in, protect their position, and let the sprinters have their moment. The Angliru looms on Saturday, and every fraction of energy saved today could matter enormously on that final climb.
