Course Preview
Stage 3 is the longest of the four Galician opening stages, and another day that defies easy categorisation. There may not be categorised ascents on tap for stage 3, but the theme of this Vuelta continues in the route's relentless ups and downs. The third day of racing begins in Padrón, and the peloton will race for 121.2km along a lumpy course into the finish, where a reduced group could again play for a sprint finish.
The race finishes in A Coruña, one of Galicia's great Atlantic cities, and the prospect of a bunch sprint — or something close to it — will sharpen the focus of the sprint squads who have had precious little to work with over the first two stages. If the roads cooperate and the wind stays manageable, a fast, reduced group could come to the line together, and the line will go to whoever has the sharpest legs after three days of cumulative Galician punishment.
But it would be wrong to call this a straightforward day. The route is full of leg-sapping roads and nervous finales. Positioning will be vital in the final kilometres on roads that could be narrow and technical before the city finish. Crashes are always a concern on days like this, when tired riders are racing aggressively for position in a reduced bunch.
For the GC contenders, stage 3 is another day to survive rather than attack. The mountains of Asturias are still days away. The priority is to arrive in A Coruña unscathed and with the legs intact. For the sprinters and opportunists, this is possibly their best chance of the week before the road turns unmistakably upward. Do not expect the race to be quiet.
