Course Preview
If stage 1 set the tone, stage 2 keeps the pressure on. The peloton heads deeper into Galicia for another day of relentlessly undulating roads, and anyone who assumed the race would settle into a rhythm after the opening stage will quickly be disabused of that notion.
There are no categorised mountains on tap for stage 2, however the 109.8km route profile is anything but flat. The course is either up or down and likely to be a good opportunity for a breakaway or a reduced group on the roads toward the finish. In Galicia, the absence of a classified climb means little — the terrain has a way of grinding riders down through sheer persistence rather than outright steepness.
It is not a flat finish either, but the peloton will tackle a short, steep ascent in the final kilometres before a short descent into San Cibrao das Viñas. That profile — hard ramp, then a dip to the line — should suit a rider with real explosive power, someone who can go over the top of the climb and use the descent to hold off any chasers.
Stage 2 is another hilly Galician day. There are no classified climbs, but the terrain keeps rising and falling, and there are very few genuinely flat sections where the bunch can relax. For the sprinters' teams, this is another stressful day of protecting their leaders from splits and crashes on narrow roads.
For a breakaway artist, though, this stage has real promise. A small group that gets away early and manages the final climb efficiently could stay clear all the way to San Cibrao das Viñas. The red jersey holder from stage 1 will be keen to defend their lead; the GC favourites will be focused on arriving safely. The day is there for the taking.
