Course Preview
The 2026 La Vuelta Femenina wastes no time. Where the previous two editions eased the peloton in with a team time trial, this year's race opens with a hilly, punchy stage through the green interior of Galicia that demands answers before riders have barely had a chance to settle.
The route takes the peloton over back-to-back mid-race climbs — the Alto do Cruceiro at the 38.4km mark and the Alto da Portela at the 49.4km mark — before the roads wind south through Ponteareas toward the Portuguese border. Neither climb is a summit finish, but coming in quick succession they will stretch the bunch and expose any rider carrying early-season fatigue.
The peloton then races along an undulating route into the punchy uphill finish at Salvaterra de Miño, where the winner collects the event's first red jersey. It is a finish that rewards punch over pure speed — a sprinter who cannot climb will struggle here, while a genuine puncheur with quick legs will thrive.
Two-time defending champion Demi Vollering is absent, having opted for the Giro d'Italia instead, but Marlen Reusser — who finished second in 2025 — is among those set to challenge for overall honours. The GC contenders will be watching each other carefully on this opening day, prioritising safety over aggression, but the stage is tailor-made for an ambitious puncheur to steal the initiative and the first red jersey.
This is not the sort of first stage where a pure flat-finisher can simply sit in and wait. The race should start aggressively, and the first red jersey is likely to go to a rider with both punch and positioning rather than just raw speed. Galicia has a way of sorting riders out early. Sunday will be no exception.
