Stage 5 of the 2026 Vuelta a España is in the books. The final results and standings are below, followed by our recap of how the race unfolded.
Race Recap
Matthew Brennan (TVL) won his second stage of this Vuelta, leading the bunch into Roquetes after being perfectly led out by Wout van Aert (TVL) and Christophe Laporte (TVL). The young Briton finished a bike length ahead of Jordi Meeus (RBH), with Vincenzo Albanese (EFE) in third and Alessandro Romele (XAT) fourth.
The stage started with five riders attacking to form the early break, although Stefan Küng (TUD) soon dropped out of it after it became apparent the bunch weren't going to allow them much leeway. With crosswinds threatening and the battle for position in the peloton very active as a result, the breakaways were caught with 99km remaining.
After Ethan Hayter (SOQ) had attacked from the bunch to win the intermediate sprint, Andreas Kron (UXM) made a late solo sortie, but Team Visma | Lease a Bike were quick to close all moves down to pave the way for Brennan.
