Wout van Aert (TVL) took the stage win that he's threatened ever since the start of this race and the fourth victory for his Team Visma | Lease a Bike team when he outsprinted Valentin Paret-Peintre (SOQ) at the end of scintillating stage into Loja.
He was part of a 43-strong group that went clear on the opening climb of the stage. After many comings and goings, just nine remained at the front nearing the finish, among them Van Aert's teammate Matthew Brennan (TVL), who, together with Van Aert, marked every attack that came from their rivals.
With 3.5km remaining, Van Aert attacked and Paret-Peintre was the only rider able to follow. Although the Frenchman pushed the Belgian hard in the sprint, there was only going to be one winner.
