Seven years after Tadej Pogačar (UEX) made his Grand Tour breakthrough at the Vuelta, Jakob Omrzel (TBV) emulated his Slovenian compatriot as he clinched a sensational solo victory at Calar Alto, the highest point on this year's route.
After attacking from the remains of the breakaway on the final climb, Omrzel finished 1'56" ahead of Urko Berrade (EKP), with his teammate Santiago Buitrago (TBV) a few more seconds back in third.
Enric Mas (MOV) emerged as the strongest of the GC favourites. Well supported and set up by his teammates, the Spaniard attacked halfway up the final climb and eventually gained 27 seconds on rivals Felix Gall (DCT), Primož Roglič (RBH) and Richard Carapaz (EFE).
