Race Recap

Juan Ayuso won the Volta ao Algarve today. The Spaniard claimed both the stage and the overall title on the Alto do Malhão, sprinting through a small elite group in the closing metres of the 2.6km summit finish to put an emphatic stamp on his debut week in Lidl-Trek colours.

The 148.4km final stage from Faro arrived at the iconic Malhão, a ramp that averages 9.3% but eases in the very last stretch before the line. A select group formed on the climb as the race whittled down. Oscar Onley (Ineos Grenadiers) led into the final metres and opened his sprint first — but Ayuso was on his wheel and reacted instantly, coming around the British rider at the line to take the win. Onley was second. Paul Seixas finished third and held second in the general classification. Almeida was fourth on the day. Final GC: Ayuso overall, Seixas second, Almeida third. A near-perfect week for the Spaniard — stage win, yellow jersey from day two, and the overall. His new team will be very pleased with the first result of this partnership.
