Race Recap
Paul Magnier doubled up in Lagos today. The Soudal-QuickStep sprinter won his second stage of this Volta ao Algarve with a measured and powerful performance that left no room for debate about who the fastest finisher in this race is. The sprint stage provided a day of recovery for the GC contenders before tomorrow's decisive climb to Alto do Malhão.
The 175.1km from Albufeira featured a nine-man breakaway that animated much of the stage before the sprinters' teams pulled it back with 30km to go. A headwind on the run into Lagos created hesitation in the bunch — nobody wanted to commit too early. Tim Torn Teutenberg (Lidl-Trek) launched the leadout inside 700 metres, and Magnier waited for just the right gap before powering down the centre of the road with a burst that none of his rivals could answer. He beat Jordi Meeus (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) by a bike length, with Oded Kogut (NSN Cycling Team) third. Ayuso finished safely in the bunch. His lead of 14 seconds over Seixas carries into tomorrow's finale.
