Race Recap
Paul Magnier opened the 52nd Volta ao Algarve with a sprint victory in Tavira today and pulled on the first yellow jersey of the week. The 21-year-old Frenchman (Soudal-QuickStep) timed his effort to perfection, launching off the wheel of Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Premier Tech) in a headwind finish to take the win ahead of Jordi Meeus (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) and Pavel Bittner.
The 185.6km coastal opener from Vila Real de Santo António was designed for the sprinters and delivered, though not without its subplot. The race introduced a golden kilometre bonus sprint format this year, and Juan Ayuso (Lidl-Trek) banked three seconds early in his bid for the overall — a detail that could matter more as the week progresses. A nine-rider breakaway formed early and was brought back by the sprint teams in good time, leaving a chaotic bunch gallop in Tavira where the headwind complicated positioning for every leadout. Magnier didn't panic. He waited, found Philipsen's wheel, and went at the right moment. Clear winner.
