Stage 1 of the 2026 Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana is in the books. The final results and standings are below, followed by our recap of how the race unfolded.
Race Recap
Diego Pablo Sevilla and Mats Wenzel launched the break of the day, while Danny van der Tuuk and Adam Lewis bridged across. The peloton was happy to let them go and was 3 minutes back in no time.
The gap on Puerto de los Madroños dropped under two minutes as Lewis let the others go. After Van der Tuuk crested the top first to take the mountain jersey, he lost contact on the descent. Meanwhile, the peloton had been whittled down to around twenty riders on the climb.
The remaining attackers were reeled in with 25 kilometres remaining, triggering a series of successive attacks. Giulio Pellizzari was the only one to make a successful move. The peloton regrouped behind the young Italian. Mads Pedersen was missing, as he abandoned the race after a crash.
Pellizzari rode for kilometres with a roughly 20-second gap to the peloton, but they started to close in on him in the streets of Torreblanca.
Just before the flamme rouge, the peloton swallowed up the lone rider, after which Biniam Girmay took control of the sprint. Arne Marit and Giovanni Leonardi had to settle for second and third place.
