2026 Volta a Catalunya Stage 4 Results & Recap
Stage 4 of the 2026 Volta a Catalunya is in the books. The final results and standings are below, followed by our recap of how the race unfolded.
Race Recap
Strong winds resulted in the total reshaping of what should have been the first of a trio of high-mountain stages and instead offered the sprinters an unexpected opportunity for success. Ethan Vernon (NSN) didn't let the chance pass him by, beating double stage-winner and race leader Dorian Godon (IGD) by more than a bike length, while Tom Pidcock (PQT) took third place and four useful bonus seconds to boost himself into second place on GC ahead of the two mountain stages just ahead.
This stage followed much the same format as the previous three, a small break forming with mountains leader Baptiste Veistroffer (LOI) among those out front. While the Frenchman sat up after adding to his lead in that competition, Merhawi Kudus (BBH) and Samuel Fernández (EUS) pressed on. Their advantage was never much more than 2 minutes and the pair were reeled in 18km from home.
Following an intermediate sprint won by Pidcock, earning him three bonus seconds, a bunch sprint was nailed on the long false flat that led into the new finish at Camprodon. The key to success was always likely to be positioning going into a sharp left-hand turn 300m from the line, and Vernon came off the wheel of teammate Jake Stewart (NSN) to lead the peloton through it.
Godon was right on his wheel, but the French champion never closed the gap on his rival once Vernon had opened up his sprint, the Briton holding his advantage all the way to the line to claim his second victory of the season after a stage win at the Tour Down Under.
