Race Recap

The opening stage of the Volta a Catalunya starting and finishing in Sant Feliu de Guíxols tends to serve up an enthralling finish and the 2026 version ran to script. Dorian Godon (IGD) had the sprint speed and staying power to take victory, but it was mighty close for the French champion, who faded a touch in the closing meters and edged out Remco Evenepoel (RBH) by little more than a tire's width at the line.

After opening up the sprint from 350m out, Tom Pidcock (PQT) took third place in a peloton that had been much whittled-down as it raced over a series of headlands on the Mediterranean coast.

The break of the day formed very early, Baptiste Veistroffer (LOI) joining brothers Unai Aznar (EUS) and Hugo Aznar (EKP), Josh Burnett (BBP) and Tyler Stites (MAP). Veistroffer led over the day's two climbs to claim the mountains jersey as the breakaway quickly built up a lead of 4 minutes.

The quintet stayed clear until they reached the coast road with 22km remaining. Burnett was the last of them to be swallowed up by the bunch, where UAE, Red Bull, Visma and Bahrain were all prominent as they defended their leaders approaching the challenging finish.

Evenepoel and Pidcock said before the stage they fancied their chances on the final drag, but so too did the in-form Godon, and the Frenchman did just enough to fully justify the work his teammates had done for him.
