Race Recap

Giulio Pellizzari took the race lead today. The Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe rider won stage 2 of the Tour of the Alps in a small-group sprint on the Val Martello finishing climb, narrowly edging Thymen Arensman (Ineos Grenadiers) after a 147.5km crossing from Austria to South Tyrol.

The stage ran from Telfs over two major climbs before the finishing ascent of 5km at 8.9%. As the roads steepened, the field thinned — stage 1 winner Tommaso Dati disappeared from the front group and the result was left to the real contenders. In the final sprint to the Val Martello line, Pellizzari had the most left, going hard from close range and holding off Arensman's late surge. It was only his second professional win, following his breakthrough at last year's Vuelta a España. He leads Arensman by four seconds tonight, with Egan Bernal (Ineos Grenadiers) close behind.
