Jay Vine Crushes the Corkscrew\nBy Clara Beard
Jay Vine gave a commanding performance on stage 2 of the Santos Tour Down Under, securing victory in Uraidla following a strong late attack by UAE Team Emirates XRG that changed the outcome of both the stage and the overall standings.
A strong seven-rider break animated the opening half of the day, hoovering up intermediate sprint bonuses and early KOM points as the peloton, led largely by UAE, kept things on a manageable leash. The race truly kicked off on the second ascent of Corkscrew Road, where the pace exploded, and the ochre jersey of Tobias Lund Andresen was quickly dropped, guaranteeing a new race leader by day’s end.
Adam Yates set a strong tempo on the steepest ramps, cracking the group before Vine launched a decisive acceleration. Only defending champion Jhonatan Narváez could follow, the UAE teammates riding clear in a show of collective strength. Vine crested the climb first to claim maximum KOM points, then drove the descent and run-in as the gap ballooned beyond 40 seconds.
Behind, a reduced chase group formed but never found cohesion. Mauro Schmid proved the strongest of the chasers, sprinting to third on the stage and catapulting himself into contention on GC.
Up front, Vine led out the final kilometre before sealing the win ahead of Narváez, collecting both the stage victory and the maximum time bonus. The result puts Vine into the ochre jersey with a six-second cushion over his teammate, while Schmid sits third at 1:05, making stage 2 a clear declaration of intent from UAE Team Emirates XRG as the race heads deeper into the hills.
