San Watson Whips into the Lead at TDU\nBy Clara Beard
Samuel Watson (INEOS Grenadiers) powered to victory in the opening prologue of the Santos Tour Down Under, setting a blistering time of 4:16 on the fast, flat 3.6-kilometre circuit through Adelaide to claim the first ochre jersey of the race. Watson set the early benchmark time and then endured a long, tense wait in the hot seat as rider after rider failed to match his pace on the technical, wind-affected course.
Ethan Vernon (NSN Cycling Team) came closest, matching Watson on time but ultimately settling for second, less than 1 second behind the young Briton, while Laurence Pithie (Red Bull–BORA–hansgrohe) rounded out the podium at two seconds back. Jay Vine (UAE Team Emirates–XRG), the Australian time trial champion and final rider to start, took risks through the sharp corners in a late bid for victory but finished fourth, four seconds down, just ahead of Pierre Gautherat (Decathlon–AG2R La Mondiale).
Behind them, several big names posted solid but relatively unspectacular rides. Lucas Plapp (Team Jayco AlUla) finished seven seconds back, Mauro Schmid (Team Jayco AlUla) impressed to move into the provisional top five earlier in the evening, and Jhonatan Narváez (UAE Team Emirates–XRG) recorded a decent 11th place, just a fraction off the top ten.
