Tadej Pogačar (UEX) said that he wanted to win on Alpe d'Huez and he achieved that goal after dropping Lenny Martinez (TBV) and Richard Carapaz (EFE) in the final kilometre and riding clear to finish 6 seconds ahead of Martinez and 9 ahead of yesterday's winner Carapaz.

Martinez and Carapaz had been part of a 42-man break that went clear early in the stage. At the foot of the iconic final climb to Alpe d'Huez, there were just a dozen riders left out front, 3'20" ahead of the yellow jersey group.

Martinez and Carapaz were the only riders able to follow an attack by Sepp Kuss (TVL) 3km up the climb. Nearing the same point three minutes later, Pogačar accelerated away from his GC rivals.

With 4km to the finish, the three leaders emerged from mayhem into the barriered section and glanced back to see the yellow jersey closing fast. Carapaz anticipated his arrival with another attack, which saw off Kuss. Martinez, though, stuck to Pogačar's wheel.

The inevitable catch of Carapaz was made 1.5km from the line. Pogačar made one thrust and then, with 900m left, a second that took him clear to fulfill another ambition.
