Vollering wins Stage 5 as Reusser keeps yellow
Demi Vollering (FDJ United-Suez) won a punishing Stage 5 of the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift after catching Katarzyna Niewiadoma-Phinney (Canyon//SRAM) just before the line in Belleville-en-Beaujolais.
Niewiadoma-Phinney attacked with 500 meters remaining and briefly appeared to have the winning gap, but Vollering closed her down and powered past to claim her fourth career Tour stage victory. Yellow jersey Marlen Reusser (Movistar Team) finished second, with Niewiadoma-Phinney third in the same time.
The 140-kilometer stage from Mâcon featured eight categorized climbs and roughly 2,800 meters of elevation gain, with the climbing beginning almost immediately on the Côte de Cenves.
Puck Pieterse (Fenix-Premier Tech) went on the offensive early, taking maximum points across the opening climbs. By the Col de Fontmartin, the Dutch rider had mathematically secured the polka dot jersey for another day.
Niamh Fisher-Black (Lidl-Trek) launched one of the first significant attacks before Maëva Squiban’s acceleration helped form a large breakaway. The front group eventually grew to about 20 riders and included several general classification threats, including Antonia Niedermaier, Dominika Włodarczyk and Femke de Vries.
The break pushed its advantage to nearly two minutes as the relentless terrain and temperatures reaching 34 degrees Celsius began to thin the peloton. Lorena Wiebes, Silvia Persico and Marion Bunel were among the riders who struggled on the early climbs.
With the break holding 1:20 at the foot of the Col de Durbize, FDJ United-Suez increased the pace behind. Vollering attacked with 30 kilometers remaining, drawing Reusser and Niewiadoma-Phinney into a select chase while defending champion Pauline Ferrand-Prévot lost contact.
The general classification contenders caught the surviving breakaway riders with about 22 kilometers to go. Reusser then took six bonus seconds in Saint-Lager, followed by Vollering with four and WĹ‚odarczyk with two.
Vollering launched several accelerations on the steep Mont Brouilly but could not shake Reusser or Niewiadoma-Phinney. Niewiadoma-Phinney attacked near the summit, leaving the three riders together for the descent and run to the finish.
Włodarczyk finished fourth at 45 seconds, followed by Isabella Holmgren and Niedermaier in the same time. Ferrand-Prévot placed 19th, 2:35 behind Vollering.
Reusser retained the yellow jersey by 12 seconds over Vollering. Niewiadoma-Phinney moved into third overall at 1:17, with Niedermaier fourth at 2:40 and WĹ‚odarczyk fifth at 2:54.
