Isaac del Toro put this Tirreno-Adriatico to bed today. The UAE Team Emirates-XRG rider won stage 6 into Camerino and extended his overall lead to 42 seconds over Giulio Pellizzari, with Matteo Jorgenson (Visma-Lease a Bike) one further second behind in third. With only a sprint stage remaining, del Toro has won this race.
The queen stage ran from San Severino Marche and included the Sassotetto (13.1km at 7%) before a punishing 3.2km finishing circuit ramp at 8.9%. Pellizzari and Jorgenson tested del Toro repeatedly on those slopes, and each time he matched them without breaking a sweat. In the final sprint for the stage on the upper ramp, del Toro was the strongest. Tobias Halland Johannessen (Uno-X Mobility) edged Jorgenson for second. "I controlled everything today and that gives me a lot of confidence," del Toro said at the finish. At 21 years old, he has just won the Race of the Two Seas in all but name.
