Race Recap

The USA's Luke Lamperti (EFE) took the biggest win of his young career when he showed a clean pair of heels to his sprint rivals on the opening stage of Paris-Nice in Carrières sous Poissy. Beautifully led out in what was a rather messy finish by teammates Kasper Asgreen and Marijn van den Berg, Lamperti burst clear along the right-hand barrier with 200 meters remaining and held off all comers, as Lotto's Vito Braet took second place and Movistar's Orluis Aular was third.

Not only was it Lamperti's first win for his new team, but it was also his team's first this season, ending a victory drought that dated back to Ben Healy's stage victory on the Tour de France last July.

The stage on the western side of Paris was fast from the off. Six riders made it into the breakaway: Casper Pedersen (SQS), Luke Durbridge, Patrick Gamper (both JAY), Max Walker (EFE), Mathis Le Berre (TEN) and Sébastien Grignard (LOI). Their maximum advantage was just 1:45, but the six riders managed the gap well in the closing kilometers and were only caught 2.5km from the line.
