Rainbows in Rwanda for Pogacar

Tadej Pogacar delivered a masterclass in Kigali to win the men’s elite world championship road race and claim the rainbow jersey for the second year. Over a course of 267.5 kilometres, featuring more than 5,500 metres of climbing and a relentless series of short, steep ascents, the Slovenian proved untouchable once he made his relatively early move on Mont Kigali.

With just over 60 kilometres to go, Pogacar accelerated away from Isaac Del Toro, leaving the Mexican rider behind on the slopes and striking out alone. Behind, Remco Evenepoel was delayed by a bike change and lost significant time, though he battled back into contention. The Belgian attempted to launch a decisive chase effort with 20 kilometres to go, but the gap remained firmly in Pogacar’s favour.

Even as the final lap loomed, Pogacar’s lead continued to grow. His UAE teammates had long since fallen away, but the 25-year-old rode with total composure, pounding the pedals up the final cobbled climb of the Mur de Kigali before celebrating early, hammering his handlebars in anticipation of victory. By the finish, he had more than a minute and a half in hand.

Evenepoel crossed the line 1:30 down, shaking his head in frustration at silver, while Ben Healy of Ireland emerged from the chasers to secure third place and the bronze medal.
