Vingegaard Triumphs on Valdezcaray, Closes Gap in GC
Jonas Vingegaard (Visma–Lease a Bike) stormed to victory on Stage 9 of La Vuelta a España, dropping his rivals on the final climb to Valdezcaray to take his first win of the race. The Dane surged clear with just under 9 kilometers remaining and held off João Almeida (UAE Team Emirates XRG) and Tom Pidcock (Q36.5), who chased together but crossed the line 24 seconds back.
The 195.5-kilometer stage from Alfaro to the ski resort of Valdezcaray featured rolling “Spanish flat” terrain before the decisive 13.2 km ascent at 5%. Despite several early moves, including a five-man breakaway with Michel Hessmann (Movistar), Michał Kwiatkowski (Ineos Grenadiers), Archie Ryan (EF Education-EasyPost), Kevin Vermaerke (Picnic PostNL) and Liam Slock (Lotto), the peloton never allowed much room. By the foot of the final climb, the general classification contenders were positioned for battle.
Felix Gall (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale) initially clung to the favorites, but Vingegaard’s acceleration proved decisive. Almeida urged Pidcock to share the workload as the pair tried to close the gap, while Gall slipped back to finish fourth at +1:03. Raúl García Pierna (Arkéa-B&B Hotels) rounded out the top five, 1:46 behind.
Torstein Træen (Bahrain Victorious), in red at the start of the day, faltered on the climb, conceding nearly two minutes but retained the jersey another day.
