Gaudu Sprints to Stage 3 Victory, Vingegaard Holds Red
Stage 3 of the Vuelta a España was a short but intense day of racing from San Maurizio Canavese to Ceres, covering 134.6 kilometers over rolling terrain with nearly 2,000 meters of climbing. What started as a lively battle for the breakaway ended with a climber’s sprint, as David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ) outkicked Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) to win the stage. Jonas Vingegaard (Visma | Lease a Bike) finished third and kept the red jersey.
The day’s early moves saw Alessandro Verre (Arkéa-B&B Hotels) and Sean Quinn (EF Education-EasyPost) crest the Category 2 climb of Issiglio, with Quinn also earning maximum points at the intermediate sprint in Cuorgnè. Despite strong resistance, their effort was caught with under 40 km remaining as Lidl-Trek and Visma set the pace in pursuit. A brief solo attempt by Quinn was neutralized before the final categorized climb.
The finale featured slick roads from late-summer storms and high tension in the reduced peloton. Lidl-Trek controlled the approach, setting up Pedersen, while Victor Campenaerts kept Vingegaard safely near the front. Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck) lost contact before the final climb, leaving the punchier riders to contest the win.
Under the flamme rouge, Giulio Ciccone led out the sprint, Pedersen rounded the final corner first, but Gaudu timed his acceleration perfectly to pass in the last meters. Vingegaard crossed close behind to secure third, protecting his overall lead.
