Vingegaard Powers to Stage 2 Victory in Limone Piemonte, Seizes La Roja
Jonas Vingegaard (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) stamped his authority on the 2025 Vuelta a España by outsprinting Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek) on the steep final climb to Limone Piemonte to win Stage 2 and take the overall lead.
The 159.6-kilometer stage from Alba to the Limone 1400 ski resort featured flat roads leading into a decisive Category 2 climb: 9.8 kilometers at 5.1%, with gradients pitching up to 10% in the final kilometer. Conditions grew treacherous as rain slicked the roads, contributing to multiple crashes. Guillaume Martin (Groupama-FDJ) was forced to abandon, while Tom Pidcock (Q36.5) and Axel Zingle (Visma) also hit the deck but remounted.
A four-man breakaway: Gal Glivar (Alpecin-Deceuninck), Jakub Otruba (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA), Liam Slock (Lotto), and Sinuhe Fernandez (Burgos-BH)—animated the day, sweeping up the intermediate sprint in Busca before being reeled in ahead of the finale.
The decisive battle began under heavy rain on the lower slopes of Limone Piemonte. Visma and Ineos kept the tempo high, whittling the peloton down before the fireworks began inside the final kilometer. Marc Soler (UAE Team Emirates XRG) was first to attack, followed by Tom Pidcock, but Giulio Ciccone launched what looked like a winning move with 500 meters remaining.
In the final surge to the line, Vingegaard responded, accelerating past Ciccone just barely to secure victory. David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ) finished third, with Egan Bernal (INEOS Grenadiers) and João Almeida (UAE) close behind.
