2025 Vuelta a España Stage 17 Results & Recap
Stage 17 of the 2025 Vuelta a España is in the books. The final results and standings are below, followed by our recap of how the race unfolded.
Race Recap
Giulio Pellizzari took his first professional victory today, and he did it on one of the most brutal summit finishes on this year's Vuelta. The 21-year-old Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe rider attacked 3.5 kilometres from the top of the Alto de El Morredero and rode alone to the finish, 16 seconds clear of Tom Pidcock (Pinarello Q36.5) and Jai Hindley (Red Bull) as the GC favourites played it out behind him.
The stage started under a cloud — literally and figuratively. Rain fell at the start in O Barco de Valdeorras, and before the flag dropped, the peloton voted to neutralise the race if further pro-Palestinian protests disrupted proceedings, as they had on several stages this week. The racing ran its full course. A breakaway of around a dozen riders formed but was controlled all day by Visma-Lease a Bike, protecting Jonas Vingegaard's red jersey. Red Bull took over on the lower slopes of the Morredero — a 12km ascent averaging 9.7% — and the pace was savage. Felix Gall was dropped early. Jai Hindley accelerated hard with 6km to go, forcing a split, and João Almeida (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) needed several seconds to claw back.
What followed was a tactically frozen stalemate between Vingegaard and Almeida, neither willing to blink first. That vacuum was Pellizzari's gift. He went at 3.5km, and nobody responded. He didn't look up. He didn't look back. He reached the line with his arms wide open. Behind him, Pidcock finished second, Hindley third, and Vingegaard and Almeida crossed together 20 seconds back. The red jersey gap heading into tomorrow's Valladolid time trial: Vingegaard leads Almeida by 50 seconds.
