Double win for Buitrago in Portell Mortella
Santiago Buitrago dominated the fourth stage of the Tour of Valencia. In the punchy final kilometer, he broke away from the rest of the field and powered to victory. As a bonus, the Colombian secured the leader's jersey from João Almeida.
Despite several attacks, the peloton remained together for over 20 kilometers. Then, Diego Uriarte and Hugo Houle teamed up, while Jon Agirre bridged to them. The trio opened up a gap of over eight minutes.
The lead of the trio fell to under two minutes on the Alto de Vistabella del Maestrat.
Several riders attempted to bridge across. Most were unsuccessful, but Pablo Castrillo managed to complete this mission. He rode out alone, with only Agirre on his wheel.
For a time, the two were two minutes ahead of the peloton, but as their lead began to shrink, Castrillo opted to go solo.
The peloton caught the Spaniard with 10 kilometers remaining. Shortly after, Jefferson Cepeda launched an attack. The Ecuadorian established a decent lead, but Jakob Söderqvist overtook him with Jonathan Milan in his slipstream in the uphill final kilometer. And what’s this? Like a rocket, Santiago Buitrago powered up the climb! He zipped past the Lidl-Trek duo and stormed to victory – winning both the stage and, in all likelihood, the Tour of Valencia.
