Roglic Wins Final Stage to Take GC
The Volta a Catalunya concluded with an impressive performance by Primoz Roglic. He crowned a solo effort of over 20 kilometers with both the stage and overall win. Juan Ayuso had to settle for second place, while Enric Mas finished third.
The peloton stayed together on the way to the first intermediate sprint. Primoz Roglic takes three bonus seconds and Juan Ayuso 1, allowing the Slovenian to move ahead of the Spaniard in the overall classification. In the second sprint, Ayuso beat Nico Denz and Primoz Roglic, putting him back in first place.
With 20 kilometers to go, Roglic attacked on the steepest section of the third-to-last lap. He crossed the finish line 24 seconds ahead of the peloton, which included Aysuo.
One lap later, Enric Mas, Axel Laurance, Lennert Van Eetvelt, and Mikel Landa gave chase at the same spot, with Juan Ayuso unable to follow. The four were caught again, after which Lennert Van Eetvelt and Laurens De Plus tried their luck on the last climb. Once again, Ayuso could not keep up.
It was clear: Roglic was the strongest rider in the race, and he soloed to both the stage and overall victory. De Plus outsprinted Van Eetvelt in the battle for second place.\n
