Course Preview
Featuring nearly 3,100 meters of elevation gain, the 4th stage of the Volta a Catalunya is a 188.7-kilometer race from Sant Vicenç de Castellet to Montserrat. The final 8.8 kilometers ascend at an average gradient of 6.6%.
Sant Vicenç de Castellet and professional cycling races—once an unlikely combination, but that’s about to change, as the town will host La Volta a Catalunya for the next three years. The first of these three stages goes to Montserrat, home to a monastery established a millennium ago. Back in 1995, Laurent Jalabert was the last La Volta stage winner on the iconic Montserrat mountain.
The route is hilly from the outset, beginning with a 2.6-kilometer ascent at an average gradient of 5.1%. After descending into Manresa, the road ascends again over 9.8 kilometers at 3%. While these early sections aren’t classified, they present opportunities for riders aiming to join the day’s breakaway.
Approximately 125 kilometers into the race, the peloton encounters the first classified climb, Turó del Puig, which is 5.1 kilometers long and has an average gradient of 5.4%. After descending, there’s another uncategorized ascent, the Alt de Malans, measuring 6.2 kilometers at 3.8%.
From the Alt de Malans, 35 kilometers remain to the base of the final climb. This section is mostly downhill, except for a 2.1-kilometer rise at 6.5%. The concluding ascent to Montserrat then includes 8.8 kilometers at an average gradient of 6.6%.
The first three riders to cross the finish line receive time bonuses of 10, 6, and 4 seconds, while the intermediate sprints offer 3, 2, and 1 seconds.
