Brennan Triumphs over Del Grosso in Thrilling Finale
Nineteen-year-old Matthew Brennan sprinted to victory in the rain-soaked, hilly opening stage of the Volta a Catalunya. He caught late attacker Tibor Del Grosso just before the finish line to secure the win. Naturally, Brennan is the first overall leader of the race.
Danny van der Tuuk and Jan Castellon initiate the first attacks. José Luis Faura and Nicolás Alustiza joined them, creating a 4-minute gap.
Faura and Van der Tuuk were caught just before the riders crossed the line for the first time, with the other two caught a little later.
​Enric Mas won the intermediate sprint in Llagostera, securing three bonus seconds; Primož Roglič crossed the line in third place, earning one second.
Meanwhile, the rain continued to pour as the peloton cruises, largely bunched together, towards the finish line. Approximately fifty riders remained in the final 10 kilometers. While descending toward the finishing venue, Tibor Del Grosso descended so effectively that he created a gap. He pressed on, starting the steep final 500 meters with a 100-meter lead. Matthew Brennan set off in pursuit, with only Kaden Groves, Del Grosso’s teammate, able to keep pace.​
Del Grosso began to tire in the last 50 meters, allowing the 19-year-old Brit to close the gap in the final 5 meters. Groves lacked the power to overtake, and Brennan clinched both the stage win and the leader’s jersey.
