Welcome to our live coverage of Stage 1 of the 2025 Volta a Catalunya! Our live profile and commentary are below, followed by a preview of the technical aspects of the route.
Course Preview
The Volta a Catalunya kicks off for the fourth consecutive year with a hilly race starting and finishing in Sant Feliu de Guíxols. The stage covers 178.6 kilometers and includes 2,765 meters of elevation gain, while the 500-meter home straight ascends at 5%.
The course for the Sant Feliu de Guíxols stage varies each year, but the essence remains unchanged. This is logical, as the finale is too good to overlook.
This year’s route features two loops with several intermediate climbs. The first loop includes ascents up the Alt de Santa Pellaia (5.9 kilometers at 4%) and Alt de la Ganga (3.5 kilometers at 4.1%). After this, riders cross the finish line for the first time just past the halfway mark. In the second lap, they encounter additional climbs measuring 5.8 kilometers at 4.5%, 5.9 kilometers at 4%, and 5.8 kilometers at 4.5%. The latter occurs with 9 kilometers left to race. Typically, the race culminates in an intense finale, and this year will likely be no different. Following a technical section with numerous twists and turns and some short uphill stretches, the 500-meter home straight ascends at approximately 5%.
Australians have often found success in Sant Feliu de Guíxols. Michael Matthews clinched victories there in 2019 and 2022, while Nick Schultz won last year. In between, in 2023, Primoz Roglic edged out Remco Evenepoel in a direct duel to claim the top spot.
The first three riders to cross the finish line earn time bonuses of 10, 6, and 4 seconds, while the intermediate sprints offer 3, 2, and 1 seconds.
