Race Recap

Marlen Reusser won on home roads today. The Swiss rider outsprinted Demi Vollering in a two-up finish in Gstaad after the pair rode clear of the entire field more than 55 kilometres from the line — producing one of the most striking opening stages this race has seen.

The 95.5km circuit around Gstaad featured two major climbs in its first third: the Saanenmöser and the formidable Jaunpass (8km at 8.4%). In sweltering heat, Sarah Gigante (AG Insurance-Soudal) attacked with 3km to the QOM and forced a split, leaving six riders in the lead group — Gigante, Reusser, Vollering, Kasia Niewiadoma-Phinney, Niamh Fisher-Black and Urška Žigart. Gigante took the mountain points at the top, and Reusser immediately launched on the descent, her trademark technical descending opening a gap that only Vollering could close. The two former SD Worx teammates fell into an efficient rhythm, turning the screws on the long flat run back to Gstaad until they held over two minutes on Niewiadoma-Phinney's chase group.

The finish was a game of tactics. Reusser attacked at 2.2km to go and Vollering didn't let her escape, then refused to take further turns in the closing kilometre. Vollering opened her sprint at 250 metres — it looked enough — but Reusser came around her on the final 100 metres and won by a bike length. "She went a bit early," Reusser said, still catching her breath. "I'm super happy." Vollering trails by four seconds in the general classification tonight, Niewiadoma-Phinney third at 1:51.
