Race Recap
Clear solo win for Almeida, Grégoire stays in yellow
João Almeida successfully distanced himself from Ben O'Connor, Oscar Onley, and Felix Gall in the final kilometers of the Splügen Pass. Despite the increasing size of the pursuing group, the Portuguese rider maintained his lead, ultimately achieving a solo victory in the stage. Romain Grégoire preserved his overall lead in the competition.
There was no shortage of attempts—quite the contrary—but it took an extended period for a breakaway to take shape. Approximately 80 kilometers into the race, Andrew August, Georg Zimmermann, and Larry Warbasse finally succeeded in establishing a gap significant enough to build upon, particularly after being joined by Neilson Powless, Quinn Simmons, Thomas Gloag, Sébastien Grignard, and Marius Mayrhofer.
This group of eight approached the major climb with a 2-minute advantage over the peloton. On the final and most pivotal section, the Splügen Pass, Powless, Gloag, and Simmons were the last attackers to be caught.
With 2 kilometers remaining to the summit, the breakaway consisted of João Almeida, Ben O’Connor, Oscar Onley, and Felix Gall. At this point, the Portuguese rider executed a decisive acceleration, breaking away from the others. GC runner-up Kévin Vauquelin closed the distance to the remaining three riders, followed closely by Pablo Castrillo, Ilan Van Wilder, Oscar Onley, Matthew Riccitello, and Clément Champoussin. They reached the summit 50 seconds behind Almeida.
Just prior to arriving at the valley floor, yellow jersey holder Romain Grégoire, along with Julian Alaphilippe and Lennard Kämna, managed to rejoin the chasing group.
The pursuers made minimal progress against Almeida, even when Onley and O’Connor collaborated in the concluding section. Consequently, the Portuguese rider claimed the stage win, while Grégoire retained the yellow jersey. However, the overall classification tightened slightly, with Almeida advancing to seventh place, a little over 2 minutes behind the leader.
