Race Recap

Jonathan Milan ended Italy's six-year wait for a Tour de France stage win this afternoon. The Lidl-Trek sprinter powered to a commanding victory in Laval after a largely uneventful 171.4km from Saint-Méen-le-Grand — a day that delivered exactly what it promised: a mass sprint, and a dominant winner.

The profile offered almost nothing — a single fourth-category bump 16km from the finish. Nobody fancied a long attack on a hot afternoon like this, and when Mathieu Burgaudeau and Matteo Vercher tried their luck from 70km out, the peloton reeled them in on the outskirts of Laval to a roar from the packed roadside. Groupama-FDJ sprinter Paul Penhoet punctured 7km from the finish and couldn't get back. Everyone else arrived intact.

Milan had been wearing the green jersey in place of Tadej Pogačar, who earned the points jersey at the Mûr-de-Bretagne yesterday. He had unfinished business today. He won the intermediate sprint en route and then delivered in the finale, powering to the line with a margin that made it look easy, holding off Wout van Aert (Visma-Lease a Bike) in second and Kaden Groves (Alpecin-Deceuninck) in third. "Winning with this jersey means a lot for me and for Italy," Milan said on the podium. No change in the GC; Pogačar holds yellow.
