Race Recap
Pogacar Claims Stage 4
A dramatic race unfolded in Rouen as Tadej Pogacar launched a fierce uphill sprint and outkicked Mathieu van der Poel and Jonas Vingegaard. Although Pogacar finished at the same time as Van der Poel, the Dutch cyclist held onto the yellow jersey.
Lenny Martinez and Jonas Abrahamsen initiated the attack from the start. First Thomas Gachignard, then Kasper Asgreen caught up to the two leaders. For much of the day, the four maintained a 2-minute lead, but their break ended on CĂ´te de Belbeuf. Martinez pushed ahead alone but was caught just before CĂ´te de Bonsecours.
At the base of Rampe Saint-Hillaire, the peloton dwindled to around 30 riders. Pogacar attacked 200 meters from the summit, with only Jonas Vingegaard able to follow. They crested the climb 10 seconds ahead.
Remco Evenepoel bridged the gap with 4 km remaining, bringing with him the yellow jersey wearer, Mathieu van der Poel, along with Matteo Jorgenson, JoĂŁo Almeida, and Oscar Onley.
Just before the flamme rouge, Jorgenson launched an attack. As the terrain rose, Almeida caught him, Van der Poel sat on Jorgenson’s wheel and started the sprint, but Pogacar overtook him to secure victory.
Van der Poel retained the yellow jersey, though with the same time as the world champion. Vingegaard finished third, 8 seconds behind the leaders.
