Course Preview

The third stage of the Tour de France takes riders through gently undulating terrain from Valenciennes to Dunkirk, covering a distance of 172 kilometers with an elevation gain of 648 meters, making it ideal for a bunch sprint.

Riders face only one notable challenge, although the term 'challenge' may be a bit strong. Similar to the opening stage, the peloton confronts the hill in Cassel, but from the opposite direction this time. The CĂ´te de Cassel stretches 2.3 kilometers with an average gradient of 4.5%.

Cassel is located just over 30 kilometers from the finish line in Dunkirk, and the final stretch is entirely flat. While crosswinds may have an impact, the terrain clearly favors a bunch sprint.

The Tour last passed through Dunkirk in 2022. During that edition, the fourth stage journeyed from this northern port city to Calais, where Wout van Aert secured victory with a late attack. For the most recent finish in Dunkirk itself, one would need to rewind to 2001, when the town hosted the Grand Départ, featuring a prologue in which Christophe Moreau claimed the first yellow jersey.
