Paret-Peintre Conquers Mont Ventoux
Valentin Paret-Peintre claimed a memorable solo victory atop Mont Ventoux on Tuesday, outlasting a strong breakaway group on one of the most iconic climbs in cycling history. The 171.5-kilometer stage from Montpellier to the summit finish marked the first major mountain test after the Tour’s second rest day and shook up the general classification.
Paret-Peintre was part of a large early breakaway that splintered over the course of the day. As the riders approached the foot of Ventoux, a smaller lead group emerged, including Ben Healy, Santiago Buitrago, Enric Mas, Ilan Van Wilder and Thymen Arensman. Paret-Peintre and Healy proved strongest on the upper slopes, where swirling winds and steep gradients created punishing conditions. Healy surged with 500 meters to go, but Paret-Peintre responded with a well-timed counterattack, pulling ahead and crossing the line first.
Healy finished second on the stage, four seconds behind. Buitrago took third, with Van Wilder and Mas rounding out the top five.
Behind them, race leader Tadej PogaÄŤar controlled his closest rival, Jonas Vingegaard, who attacked multiple times on the final climb. PogaÄŤar covered every move and maintained his grip on the yellow jersey. He finished over 40 seconds behind the stage winner but gained a handful of seconds on Vingegaard due to time gaps within their chase group.
With just a few mountain stages remaining before the final time trial, PogaÄŤar’s lead in the general classification now exceeds four minutes. Florian Lipowitz retained his third-place standing overall, with Oscar Onley and Carlos RodrĂguez still in striking distance for podium contention.
