Course Preview

Stage 15 of the Tour de France features an elevation gain of 2,500 metres across a 169-kilometre course from Muret to Carcassonne. The route seems perfectly suited for sprinters with strongman abilities.

Although the climbs are relatively minor compared to the significant Pyrenean ascents from earlier stages, pure sprinters may still find them challenging. The first 75 kilometres include four modest ascents: Côte d’Auterive (1.7 kilometres at 3.9%), Côte de Naillous (1.2 kilometres at 5.4%), Saint-Félix-de-Lauragais (2.5 kilometres at 3.3%), and Côte de Saint-Ferréol (2.6 kilometres at 5.5%). This is followed by the Col de la Croix Montalric, which presents the longest climb of the day at 11.5 kilometres, featuring an average gradient of 4.3%.

After descending and traversing a gently rolling 10-kilometre section, riders reach the Pas du Sant, a challenging 2.9-kilometre ascent at 10%, immediately succeeded by a 3.8-kilometre climb at 3.8% to the summit of the Col de Fontbruno.

With that, the major climbing for the day comes to an end, allowing riders to race down a 32-kilometre descent towards Villegailhenc. The final 10 kilometres consist of a flat approach to the finish line in Carcassonne.

Three years ago, Jasper Philipsen narrowly defeated Wout van Aert and Mads Pedersen in Carcassonne. That day's finish in the historic town was thrilling, both reminiscent and distinct in its intensity.
