Course Preview
An individual time trial covering 11 kilometers takes the riders from the valley floor to the runway of Altiport 007 in Peyragudes. Following a flat start, soloists must confront 8 kilometers of relentless ascent at a gradient of 7.8%, with the final kilometer steepening to a punishing 13%.
Starting in Loudenvielle, the riders encounter 3 kilometers of flat terrain before challenging the climb to Peyragudes. Three editions ago, Tadej Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard clashed on these very hills, with Pogacar ultimately prevailing. This year's competition promises another thrilling face-off, though the riders will not race side by side; instead, they will take on the course individually.
The Tour de France has previously concluded three times on the airport runway in Peyragudes, a site that gained fame in 1997 during a scene from the James Bond film 'Tomorrow Never Dies.' Romain Bardet and Alejandro Valverde achieved stage victories here in 2017 and 2014, respectively, though their approaches to the challenge differed each time.
In the Pogacar/Vingegaard matchup of 2022, the climb mirrored this route. This indicates that riders face 8 kilometers of consistent ascension at an average gradient of 7.8%, but the final 2.5 kilometers escalate the challenge significantly. The runway segment is particularly daunting, characterized by a 13% gradient and even a portion that reaches 16%.
