While stage 11 allows climbers to relax, stage 12 presents a significant challenge. The peloton will ascend 3,850 meters over an 181-kilometer route, with nearly all of the elevation gain concentrated in the last 60 kilometers.

The stage kicks off in Auch, a town that hosted an intermediate sprint during stage 19 in 2022. On that day, Christophe Laporte claimed victory in Cahors.

In 2022, the Tour concluded in Hautacam just a day before Laporte's win in Cahors, where the green jersey holder Wout van Aert made an incredible push during the final climb. With GC contenders Tadej Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard trailing him, Van Aert exerted so much force at the front that Pogacar struggled and lost touch. Van Aert continued to drive forward, leaving Vingegaard to seal the deal, and just three days later, the Dane celebrated his first win in the Tour de France.

Will this motivate Vingegaard to achieve something remarkable once more? Notably, the route leading to the Hautacam ascent is less daunting than it was three editions ago. In that year, riders faced the Col d’Aubisque and Col de Spandelles before the final climb. Now, they will tackle the Col du Soulor (11.9 kilometers at 7.3%) and the Col des Bordères (3.1 kilometers at 7.6%) prior to beginning the ascent to the finish. The last 13.6 kilometers to Hautacam climb with an average gradient of 7.8%, featuring a particularly steep section halfway up, where the slope reaches nearly 11% for 2 kilometers.
