Yates Edges Out Arensman in a Nail-Biter, Healy Takes Yellow

In a grueling stage through the heart of France, Simon Yates found himself in the finale with Ben Healy, Michael Storer, Ben O’Connor, and Thymen Arensman. Yates launched an attack at the base of the final climb; Arensman followed but couldn’t quite close the gap, and the Brit claimed the win.

Healy finished third to move into yellow. Julian Alaphilippe was ready for the challenge on Bastille Day. He climbed the first section with a small lead but was then overtaken by a group of about twenty riders. Lenny Martinez outsprinted Bruno Armirail at the top.

The road didn’t go downhill immediately, and with the peloton close behind, several riders managed to bridge the gap.

The lead group—Victor Campenaerts, Thymen Arensman, Simon Yates, Ben Healy, Neilson Powless, Quinn Simmons, Luke Plapp, Mauro Schmid, Michael Woods, Alexey Lutsenko, Valentin Paret-Peintre, Ilan Van Wilder, Alex Baudin, Harry Sweeny, Lenny Martinez, Quentin Pacher, Julian Alaphilippe, Michael Storer, Ben O’Connor, Raúl García Pierna, Iván Romeo, Bruno Armirail, Aurélien Paret-Peintre, Clément Champoussin, Simone Velasco, Steff Crass, Joe Blackmore, Pablo Castrillo, anders Halland Johannessen—puts 2 minutes into the peloton.

O’Connor pushed ahead of the others on the Côte de Charade. Woods, Campenaerts, Healy, Martinez, Arensman, Simmons, Yates, Baudin, and Valentin Paret-Peintre bridged up, while the acceleration widened the gap to the peloton to nearly 4 minutes. Some riders who had been dropped managed to rejoin the group as they approached the Côte de Berzet. Like on the earlier climbs, Martinez collected the maximum mountain points. He repeated this at Col de Guéry, taking the polka dot jersey from Tim Wellens in the process.

The peloton crested the Col de la Croix Morand six minutes behind the breakaway. Following a flurry of attacks on the approach to the Col de la Croix Saint-Robert, Simmons accelerated on an uphill section. Healy closed the gap, towing Storer, Arensman, O’Connor, and Yates with him.

Healy, the best-placed rider in the breakaway at 3 minutes and 55 seconds behind the yellow jersey, took over the pace-making in the final phase. His tempo proved too much for Simmons, who lost ground with 14 kilometers remaining. Yates made a move in Le Mont-Dore, right at the base of the final climb. O’Connor responded as the gradient increased. Arensman regained contact with 2.4 kilometers to go.\n
