Course Preview

No rest day on France' s national holiday; instead, riders endure a challenging day in the saddle. They confront over 4, 300 meters of elevation on a course loaded with seven significant climbs and numerous uphill segments. The race from Ennezat to Le Mont- Dore stretches across 163 kilometers.

You certainly don' t want your heart rate mirroring the profile for the stage between Ennezat and Le Mont- Dore Puy de Sancy. While officially marked with seven classified climbs, there are many more that could qualify for KOM classification.

The CĂ´te de Loubeyrat (4 kilometers at 6. 3%) is bound to initiate the breakaway activities. If there' s a stage made for an escape, it' s undoubtedly this one. The riders stay at altitude for a while before descending to Volvic. They then climb again, first to Tourtoule (4. 2 kilometers at 5. 8%), followed by Chanat- la- Moutyre (2. 2 kilometers at 6%).

As they pass through Clermont- Ferrand, the cyclists tackle the CĂ´te de la Baraque (5. 5 kilometers at 7. 2%), quickly followed by the similarly steep CĂ´te de la Charade (5. 1 kilometers at 7. 4%) and the CĂ´te de Berzet (3. 4 kilometers at 7. 4%). Meanwhile, the landscape gradually ascends, starting with 1. 5 kilometers at 5. 8%, and then rising over 3 kilometers at 4. 3%. This culminates in the Col de la Moreno, reached after 90 kilometers of action.

After a relatively brief descent from the Col de la Moreno and some rolling terrain, the peloton crosses the Col de Guery (3. 4 kilometers at 6. 4%), only to continue upward on the Col de la Croix Morand (3. 4 kilometers at 5. 8%). At the summit, there are still 41. 5 kilometers remaining in the race.

The decisive phase kicks off with a descent to Lac Chambon, followed by a 2. 3- kilometer ascent at 7. 8% and a 10- kilometer rolling section. Then, all pretenses will drop as riders sprint for victory or time advantages. The Col de la Croix Saint Robert (5. 5.1 kilometers at 6. 3%) precedes the final drive to the summit of Puy de Sancy (3. 3.3 kilometers at 8%) in the mountains above Le Mont- Dore.
