Course Preview
The 4th stage is the longest of the entire Tour Down Under. At 157.3 kilometres, the route features an elevation gain of 2,443 metres. The punchy Nettle Hill opens the finale with 20 kilometres remaining.
The route initially follows the coast southward before climbing to the Myponga dam after roughly 40 kilometres. The riders then descend back to the coast and pass through Carrickalinga and Normaville before returning to climb.
The first of two KOM climbs is Parawa Hill, a 2.9-kilometre test at 7%. By now, the riders have passed the midway marker and entered an undulating phase, which eventually leads to a descent into Victor Harbor.
Just before reaching the finish line, the route turns inland again. Nettle Hill is the second and last KOM—1.9 kilometres at 8.1%, peaking at 17.7%—and it is crested 21.3 kilometres before the finish line.
With 12 kilometres remaining, a 3-kilometre climb at shallow gradients begins. The riders then descend at breakneck speed toward the finish line on the Esplanade in Victor Harbor.
Rohan Dennis won the last stage in Victor Harbor. Two years ago, he attacked with Simon Yates, Jay Vine, Mauro Schmid, and Jai Hindley on Nettle Hill. The five held off the charging peloton before Dennis jumped clear inside the final kilometre to steal the win.
The first three riders on the line gain time bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds, while two intermediate sprints come with 3, 2 and 1 seconds.
