Course Preview
On paper, the 3rd stage of the Tour Down Under is the hardest stage of the entire race. The riders tackle 3,236 metres of climbing over a 147.5 kilometres long route, while a punchy climb precedes a downhill run-in to the line.
It’s the third time that the Tour Down Under has finished in Uraidla. Peter Sagan took the spoils on the first two occasions, in 2018 and 2019.
The riders climb from the start and cross the first KOM, Knotts Hill, after 10 kilometres. The average gradient of this opening section sits at 4%. The route then continues on a lumpy lap of almost 100 kilometres.
At the end of the big loop, the riders tackle Knotts Hill for the second time. As they come from another side, it’s a punchier test, with 2.6 kilometres at 8%.
The route veers left, and the riders move through the finish line for the first time after a 3 kilometre descent. They then descend for another 6 kilometres before returning to the loop they’ve seen before. This means Knotts Hill makes a final appearance in the finale. The 2.6-kilometre at 8% peaks out at 13.4% before the riders fly down the 3 kilometres run-in to the finish line on Green Hill Road in Uraidla.
The first three riders on the line gain time bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds, while two intermediate sprints come with 3, 2 and 1 seconds.
