Course Preview

The Barossa Valley hosts the second stage of the Tour Down Under. At 128.8 kilometres and featuring 1,598 metres of climbing, the race will likely end in a sprint in Tanunda. It comprises two identical laps and one shorter version of the same lap.

Last year’s Tanunda stage was almost the same, although it featured three times the bigger lap. The last lap is shortened this time as the riders head straight from Nutriootpa to the finish line.

Menglers Hill appears in all three laps. It is a moderate ascent of 3.8 kilometres at 3.6%, with a section up to 13%. Mountain points are available at the summit on all three occasions.

Last year, Sam Welsford powered to victory in Tanunda. Taking his first of three stage wins, he outgunned Phil Bauhaus and Biniam Girmay.

The first three riders on the line gain time bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds, while two intermediate sprints in Greenock come with 3, 2 and 1 seconds.
