Sam Welsford Wins Stage 1 of Santos Tour Down Under
Sam Welsford (Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe), just like last year, sprinted to the first ochre jersey in the Tour Down Under. In the sprint, the home rider outpaced the young English talents Matthew Brennan and Matthew Walls.
Zack Marriage, Fergus Browning, and Bastien Trochon formed a breakaway shortly after the start of stage 1. After winning the first intermediate sprint, Trochon sat up and waited for the peloton after 108 kilometres. Jhonatan Narváez capitalized on this during the second intermediate sprint, grabbing the remaining bonus second, while the two Aussies were reeled in with 25 kilometres to go.
In the streets of Gumerache, Sam Welsford rounded off a strong lead-out by his teammates. The 19-year-old talent Matthew Brennan came close but fell just short of snatching the victory from him.
