Storer Wins Queen Stage From the Breakaway, Jorgenson Retains Lead
Michael Storer dropped his fellow attacker Mauro Schmid with 2.5 kilometres to go. The Australian soloed to victory, while Matteo Jorgenson retained the overall lead. With Mattias Skjelmose abandoning, Thymen Arensman moved up to third place, while Florian Lipowitz remained in second place.
Right from the start, Kelland O’Brien, Jakub Otruba, Mauro Schmid, Fred Wright, Marco Haller, Michael Storer, Pierre Thierry, Andreas Leknessund, Rasmus Tiller, Clément Izquierdo, Anthony Perez, Alexandre Delettre, and Jordan Jegat went on the attack. They didn't get it for free, and the gap remained small. This inspired Neilson Powless, Bruno Armirail, Stefan Küng, Julian Alaphilippe, Iván Romeo, Joshua Tarling, and Georg Steinhauser to join the lead group.
Following some reshuffling, a lead group of fifteen riders – O’Brien, Schmid, Wright, Storer, Izquierdo, Perez, Delettre, Jegat, Powless, Armirail, Küng, Alaphilippe, Romeo, Tarling, Steinhauser – reached the Côte d’Aspremont with a 40-second advantage over the peloton. The gap widened to 3 minutes.
Third in the general classification, Mattias Skjelmose crashed hard with just over 50 kilometres to go and was forced to abandon.
The lead group tackled the climb to the line with a two minute advantage.
With 3 kilometres to the summit, only Storer and Schmid remained when an acceleration by the Australian proved too much for the Swiss rider. That was the decisive move and Storer soloed to triumph.
Matteo Jorgenson remains in yellow, although Florian Lipowitz gained back 3 seconds with a strong finish.
