Race Recap
Mathieu van der Poel wins Milano Sanremo
Tadej Pogacar attacked halfway up the Cipressa, with only Mathieu van der Poel and Filippo Ganna able to follow. The Italian lost contact on the Poggio, but he regained contact in the final kilometre. Van der Poel then surged ahead to secure his second La Primavera victory in three years.
Alessandro Verre, Tommaso Nencini, and Martin Marcellusi were the first attackers. Baptiste Veistroffer, Mathis le Berre, Mark Stewart, and Filippo Turconi set off in pursuit, and they made the catch after 25 kilometres. Kristian Sbaragli made it eight at the front with 255 kilometers to go, and the leaders reached a maximum advantage of almost 6 minutes.
Upon reaching the Mediterranean coast, the gap was halved. It widened again to 4 minutes.
The lead fell to 1 minute on the Capo Berta, which inspired Marcellussi to head out alone. He was caught at the foot of the Cipressa, while defending champion Jasper Philipsen lost contact with 4 kilometres to climb.
Tadej Pogacar attacked just before the steepest section of the Cipressa. He dropped one rider after the other until only Mathieu van der Poel and Filippo Ganna remained. They reached the summit 30 seconds ahead of the first chasers.
The trio crest the climb half a minute ahead of the first chasers, a lead that doubles en route to the Poggio.
At the base of the Poggio, Pogacar accelerates again, with Van der Poel glued to his wheel, while Ganna is forced to let them go go. As the Italian threatens to regain contact, the World Champion surges once more.
