Race Recap
Almeida Triumphs in Thrilling Tour of the Basque Country Finale\n \nIn a heart-pounding finale, João Almeida outsprinted Enric Mas in a two-man showdown in Eibar to clinch the overall victory of the Tour of the Basque Country. Mas secured a commendable second place, while Maximilian Schachmann wrapped up the podium in third. \n \nThe excitement intensified on the Azurki climb, where a formidable breakaway formed, featuring standout cyclists like Ben Healy, Bauke Mollema, Ion Izagirre, Daniel Felipe Martínez, Sepp Kuss, Warren Barguil, Marc Hirschi, Pablo Castrillo, and Romain Grégoire. \n \nHowever, the breakaway faced challenges on the Krabelin, with gaps between the riders remaining tight. Bruno Armirail, the King of the Mountains, was the first to conquer the summit, closely trailed by Callum Scotson, Ion Izagirre, Daniel Felipe Martínez, Ben Healy, Jordan Jegat, Txomin Juaristi, and Sepp Kuss. Not far behind were Bauke Mollema, Finlay Pickering, Warren Barguil, Romain Grégoire, and Marc Hirschi. \n \nAs these riders battled for position, Armirail surged ahead, reaching the Trabakua summit over a minute in front of the first chasers. Kuss, Juaristi, and Pickering lost contact but Armirail strategically waited for them on the descent. \n \nAfter several dozen kilometers of tension, Martínez and Healy made their decisive move on the Izua. The peloton was trailing one minute behind. Healy reached the top solo, while the yellow jersey group caught up with the remaining attackers. João Almeida was in the mix, accompanied by Isaac del Toro, Marc Soler, Thibau Nys, Mattias Skjelmose, Jordan Jegat, and Enric Mas. \n \nOn the Trabakua, just 21 kilometers from the finish, Almeida and his group caught up to Healy. Nys struggled to keep pace on the climb, and Skjelmose took a tumble on the descent. \n \nAs the race approached its climax, only Healy, Mas, and Almeida remained at the forefront over a slight rise in the final 14 kilometers. Del Toro fought hard to regain contact with 8 kilometers to go but was soon left behind again when Mas ramped up the pace. Healy also found himself unable to keep up. \n
