Course Preview
The penultimate stage of the Tour of the Basque Country is a 172.4-kilometre race featuring over 2,500 metres of elevation gain. It may not be the ideal course for general classification (GC) contenders, but stage hunters will certainly have their sights set on glory as they roll out from Urduña.
The route is far from flat, yet only four climbs are considered KOM-worthy. Las Campas appears after 18.3 kilometres (1.4 kilometres at 8.2%); Sarasola follows after 60 kilometres (2.9 kilometres at 3.5%); Aretxabalgane comes after 90.7 kilometres (4.6 kilometres at 5.4%); and Errigoiti is situated after 104.3 kilometres (4.8 kilometres at 4%).
At the top of the last climb, 68 kilometres remain. While there are no further KOM points available, the terrain is still challenging. How about a 2.3-kilometre climb at 8.6% occurring after 127 kilometres? Or a steep 2.2-kilometre wall at 9.4% after 156.2 kilometres, which then continues to rise for nearly 3 more kilometres?
There are 13.8 kilometres left to race at the summit of that final ascent, mostly downhill, though two uphill kickers add excitement to the last 4.5 kilometres. The first is 300 metres at 4.2%, and the second is 700 metres at 6.7%, with occasional ramps exceeding double digits. After that, it’s a downhill route to the finish line.
The first three riders across the line earn 10, 6, and 4 bonus seconds, while the intermediate sprints offer 3, 2, and 1 seconds.
